A teenager, who suffers from bipolar disorder, has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years after gouging out a man's eye in a "vicious and unprovoked" attack.

Sirajdin Chiragh, of Paulhan Road, Kenton, approached his male victim and broke a bottle over his head, jabbing a shard of glass into his eye during the attack outside Golds Gym in Sheepcote Road, Harrow, last July.

The 22-year-old victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, found out he had achieved a first class honours degree in accounting and finance just hours before the attack.

The incident caused life-changing injuries to the victim and he has badly impaired vision in one eye. He also suffered cuts to the top of his head and three deep cuts to the back of his neck.

Chiragh, 19, who suffers from bipolar disorder, claimed he was intoxicated and under the influence of drugs at the time of the assault.

Judge Alan Greenwood took into consideration that the defendant had pleaded guilty to the attack, his young age and that he suffered from bipolar disorder, in handing down the jail sentence.

PC Ali Plant, the officer in charge of the case said: "This was a vicious and unprovoked attack, which has left a young man with life-changing injuries for which he will continue to receive treatment for the foreseeable future.

"Not only has the attack left the victim with both physical and emotional scars, but it has also caused a great deal of emotional stress for his family.

"Sadly, the attack has meant that his education has been put on hold. However, I am confident that he will continue on his chosen career path in due course.

"I hope that today’s result will allow the victim’s family some closure."
