A COUNCILLOR elected to two different councils has confirmed he will stand down from his seat in Stanmore Park if prompted by his party, as the leader of his Conservative association said his resignation would be "appropriate".
Councillor Mark Versallion, who represents the Stanmore Park ward, was elected for another seat for the Heath and Reach area of Central Bedfordshire Council, where he lives, earlier this month.
A by-election could be held in the Stanmore Park ward after the leader of Harrow East Conservative association, Marilyn Ashton, confirmed Cllr Versallion standing down from his seat was considered “appropriate” by the association.
Cllr Versallion's responsibilities were added to on Central Bedfordshire Council when he was made portfolio holder of children’s services last week.
He has a position as a non-executive director at North-West London Hospitals NHS Trust.
He was brought on to the board for his experience as managing director of marketing company VML Ltd, based in Harrow, and for his knowledge having sat as a councillor since 2002.
The board oversees Northwick Park St Mark's, and Central Middlesex Hospitals.
He said: “We were in discussion about the situation. I feel it is right to stand down if the association thinks I should.
“This is still being discussed with the association”
Ms Ashton said: “We obviously want to get this right and feel it is important to focus on the people in the ward.
“Mark has we learn through a newspaper article in Bedfordshire said he will be standing down.
“The association having read the article is of the opinion that we don’t disagree with this decision and think it's appropriate.
“We support him if this is his choice and we think it’s the right thing to do.
“If Mark stands down from his seat then we are obviously going to have to make arrangements with the electoral returning officer.
“This will be to create a schedule as to when the by-election could be held.”
