HARROW'S Tamil community will celebrate a festival marking the collection of the harvest tomorrow.
The Thai Pongal event is a tradition based around feasting on rice grown on the paddy fields of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, which is collected at this time of year.
Cows are generally central to the vegetarian festival and are treated as being as valuable as gold.
The borough's celebration will be held in the council chamber at Harrow Civic Centre, in Station Road, at 7pm on Friday.
Councillor Krishna Suresh (Lab/Rayners Lane) said: “This is the first time we are doing this festival. We will be having some dancers and some youngsters giving speeches.
“It's a celebration with all the Tamils in Harrow. It's an opportunity that's given to all the Tamil schools and all the Tamil community in Harrow to come and perform or show their talent culturally.
“We have invited all the other communities as well to experience the event.”
