A SOUTH Harrow school opened its new state-of-the-art building to all its pupils for the first time this week.

Whitmore High School students are now learning in hi-tech classrooms with windows that open automatically when it gets to a certain temperature.

Kayla Lake, 14, who represents the borough in the 100m and 200m sprints, praised the school's new sports facilities.

She said: “At the moment I have to travel to other places to train so it’ll be really good when we get the running track.

“We’ve already got a big new sports hall as well and when I’m in year 10 I’ll be allowed to use the fitness suite.”

A running track, playing fields and basketball courts will be built by the end of the year after the old school buildings, which date back to the 1950s, are demolished.

The multi-million pound rebuild was part of Building Schools for the Future, a Labour project axed by the new coalition Government in a programme of spending cuts.

Year 7 and 8 pupils got their first taste of the new building on Friday before the older years were back.
