LABOUR has vowed to stop Government budget cuts from hitting Harrow schools.

The borough has had more than £1m stripped from a pot of money previously ring-fenced for education, sparking warnings of possible job cuts from Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West.

But Councillor Bill Stephenson, leader of Harrow Council, today said he would find the money from elsewhere so that pupils would not be hit by the drive to save cash.

He told the Harrow Times his administration will try to make the necessary savings without the need to hit front line services.

He said: “If I cannot find £1.3m there will be cuts. That's something we are working on but it's really difficult to do that in year.”

Cllr Stephenson has imposed a spending freeze at the council, and said there will be a clearer picture of what cuts will be necessary in July.
