THE Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Lurline Champagnie led the tributes to Harrow's war dead at an Armistice Day service at Harrow Civic Centre in Station Road last Thursday.

Councillor Champagnie read John McCrae's celebrated poem In Flanders' Fields before a two-minutes' silence at 11am, to mark the end of World War One in 1918.

An audience of councillors and council staff then listened to a bugle play a sombre reveille.

More poetry followed from the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Asad Omar who recited, John Oxenham's Hail and Farewell! before Chief Executive Joyce Markham read out the names of former council employees who died during the two world wars.

Councillor Champagnie said: "They sacrificed their lives so that we could have a future. We owe them a great debt."
