HARROW'S first ever all-girl football funday will be hosted by Headstone Manor Youth team later this month.

Headstone, one of the borough's biggest junior clubs, is looking to expand, and by providing girls with the chance to improve their soccer skills, hope to attract a larger number to the club.

The club already boasts more than 350 registered players, but only a fraction of them are girls. Under-13s team manager Dawn Allwood said: "We have lots of boys' teams and want to give the girls a chance. The training day is open to girls aged between eight and 14 and is free. There will be a mini-tournament with medals and trophies given out to the winners and a soccer star challenge where the girls will learn different skills from FA qualified coaches. Certificates will be awarded at the end."

But it won't all be tough competition. The girls will see if they can take a better penalty than luckless England skipper David Beckham in a special bouncy penalty shoot-out game. Football goodie-bags will also be handed out to all who attend.

Headstone Girls' currently have under-10s, under-12s and under-13 sides and compete in the Middlesex County League. Last season, the under-10s were crowned first phase champions, while their other teams finished with respectable mid-table placings.

Training takes place every Saturday from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Dawn said: "After the funday, all girls will get free taster sessions where they can come along to two or three training sessions and see if they like it before joining."

The funday takes place on Saturday, June 26, at Broadfield Sports and Social Club in Headstone Lane between 1pm and 4.30pm. For more information call Dawn Allwood on 020 88631921.
