A LARGE industrial unit in Queensbury is being torn down today after it was gutted by fire.

The warehouses in Westmoreland Road were burnt out in the fire, which broke out on Wednesday night at around 11.50pm and raged through the night.

The premises of BC Bathrooms and Price Check Tyres were completed destroyed and workers are on site today knocking the gutted buildings down.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

Eyewitness Steven Goode left his home in nearby Waltham Drive to investigate when he heard a loud bang coming from the industrial estate.

He said: “There were huge amounts of people out as the whole community was very concerned. The fire was huge and spreading extremely quickly.

“After another load bang while I was at the scene, the firefighters placed a large cordon away telling residents to step as far away as possible.”

Mr Goode added he saw the fire spread to a number of the warehouses on the site even as firefighters tackled the blaze.

They had to be cautious as gas cylinders were in one of the warehouses, prompting fears there could be an explosion.

Evacuation plans were drawn up, but people were able to stay in their homes as the fire was brought under control and eventually put out at around 7am the next day.
