A PENSIONER remains critical in hospital after he fell off his mobility scooter and was hit by a lorry in Stanmore Broadway.

The 85-year-old man had just finished shopping at Sainsburys on Thursday, July 9, when he is believed to have fallen off the three-wheeled scooter into the road outside Pizza Express.

Investigators believe he was then hit by a lorry, but the driver was unaware the accident had happened until police tracked him down afterwards.

The pensioner remains in a critical condition in hospital, suffering from head, neck, and breastbone injuries and bleeding on the brain.

Police closed the road after the accident, at around 1.15pm, for most of the afternoon to investigate, but remain in the dark over what caused the pensioner to fall into the road.

Traders in Stanmore Broadway were shocked to learn of the accident, only realising something had happened when police and paramedics arrived on the scene.

An air ambulance tried to land in the main road, but ran the risk of damaging shop fronts so landed nearby.

It rushed the pensioner to hospital for treatment as his life hung in the balance.

Although the police were initially treating the accident as a hit-and-run, as the lorry driver did not stop at the scene, he has since been questioned and cleared by investigators.
