A HINDU temple could be built in Kingsbury and the people in charge are considering setting up sports training, music lessons and tuition.

The Shree Swaminarayan Temple, in Golders Green, has bought McNicholas House, in Kingsbury Road, and wants to turn it into a new building designed with the help of members.

The temple is looking at the possibillity of having rooms for sport, as well as studying and music.

Muks Rabadia, 29, who has been a member since the age of five, said: “Through all of these activities we are trying to promote team working and give people a sense of purpose.

“You may not be the brightest person, you may not be the most academic, but go out and play sports.”

The temple promotes a wide range of sports in the community it already serves, including cricket, football, table tennis, darts and pool, and Mr Rabadia said they will continue at the new, 1.82 acre site.

Members help organise sports tournaments and training sessions and have in the past had deals with the Middlesex Cricket Board, which saw professional cricket coaches giving lessons.

Mr Rabadia said the temple could also offer classes in Gujarati as well as other academic subjects like maths, chemistry and art.

There could also be music lessons in instruments like the bag pipes and the organisation already has a pipe band which plays Scottish and Indian songs.

Mr Rabadia said: “Looking back on my own personal experience as a child, without sports, without education, without even the band, all of these things give us a sense of belonging.

“There's actually a sense of belonging that children perhaps lack, and they have the sense that they haven't got anything else to do on a Friday or Saturday night except hang around on a corner.”

The temple is holding an open day at McNicholas House on December 27.

The sale of the land was completed on Friday, November 14.
