PLANS to turn an historic mansion at a former Stanmore air force base into a museum and 103 flats have been approved.
Councillors last night agreed proposals to renovate the Grade II* listed building at RAF Bentley Priory, which was the headquarters of Fighter Command during the Second World War.
Developers want to turn some of its less historically significant 17th century rooms into housing and build several other blocks of flats on the site.
Councillor Marilyn Ashton (Cons, Stanmore), who is responsible for planning on Harrow Council, had to leave a committee meeting she usually chairs because she lives next to the site and openly supports the project.
She said: “It’s very important that we’ve got a Grade II* listed building there and it’s critical we protect it and protect our heritage.”
