A COUPLE of years have passed since the release of the animated box office hit film Antz so it's about time for Z, Princess Bala and Co to emerge from their colony and entertain us once again, though this time it's high speed racing action in Antz Extreme Racing for the PS2.

The game features six of your favourite characters from the motion picture though all but Z and Bala are locked until you start to win the races.

These take place across a multitude of tracks, each with one of four different types of transport driving, boarding, running and flying.

With an initial ranking of 5,000,000 your goal is to become number 1 and make the colony proud.

Maggot Mound and Dung Dodge are two of the beautifully named circuits to race across and on each one you must pick up a whole host of unique power ups and weapons intended to boost your speed or neutralize your opponents.

If you do not want to unlock the other characters in single mode then plug in extra controllers and race a mate or two in multiplayer mode (up to four players) as all six characters including Weaver and Mandible are instantly available to select.

The graphics and sounds are both good but it is the zany racing action which makes this a great game for Antz fans of all ages.

The controls are fairly easy to master and once you have perfected your use of the power ups you can progress through the levels quite nicely.

Whoever would have thought that racing at 0.5 mph in a cotton reel racing car as an Ant would be so much fun, it certainly is a bug's life sorry wrong film.

Overall: 4/5
