THREE Scottish fish and chip shops have been named among the best in the UK in a brand new ranking.

The chippies were named alongside other shops, including spots in places like Wales, Leeds and London.

The list was compiled through the analysis of Google, Tripadvisor and Instagram data and each spot was given an overall score.

East Coast in Musselburgh, Frankie's Fish and Chips in Brae and #Fish in Edinburgh were the Scottish chippies named among the best in the UK.

East Coast was named the joint-best in Britain, sharing the top spot with the Fish Lounge in Brixton Hill, London.

The fish and chip establishment is popular on Tripadvisor with customers giving it a 4.5/5 out of 119 reviews.

One visitor said: "Very fresh and delicious food, lovely restaurant with excellent service. Good value for money. I recommend this restaurant to everyone."

Frankie's Fish and Chips in Brae, Shetland was named the second best in the UK, with customers on Tripadvisor also giving it a 4.5/5 out of 631 reviews.

One happy patron said: "This was excellent, you can choose whether to have your fish battered or bread crumbed, which is not always the case in other establishments, it was well cooked, good portions and absolutely delicious. One of the highlights of our trip."

#Fish in Edinburgh took the ninth spot on the list with customers giving the seafood restaurant a 4.5/5 out of 20 reviews.

Discussing the food on offer, one Tripadvisor user said: "This place is excellent for vegan options. They’re not just your usual token vegan options but instead well-thought-out and original vegan dishes.

"Tonight we ordered the tofish which is battered seaweed tofu that comes with vegan tartar sauce - an amazing dish, especially if you like your tofu."
