A hospital worker has been left disabled after he was attacked by a pickaxe-wielding colleague.

Trevor MacGuire sustained head injuries when maintenance worker Matteo Bottarelli went on a rampage at Central Middlesex Hospital with a mattock and a scalpel on June 21 last year.

The hospital was evacuated and two people had to be treated for their injuries.

Bottarelli, 44, of Central Way, Park Royal, has now been found guilty at Wood Green Crown Court of the attempted murder of two colleagues and attempted GBH of another.

One of his victims – 61-year-old Trevor MacGuire – has been left with a life-long brain injury that means there are “many things” he can now no longer do.

He said: “So many things have been taken away from me and my family, but I try not to dwell on them too much.

“To get on with my life, I have to get on with the disabilities, and all I want to do now is try to put this to one side.”

Bottarelli had previously pleaded guilty to the lesser offences of wounding Trevor and another colleague, Gideon Tesfay, with intent to cause them grievous bodily harm.

But last October, he also pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder Mr Tesfay, Mr MacGuire and a third man, Mark Quigley.

He also denied an alternative charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Mr Quigley.

Following his conviction, Trevor’s wife Dawn MacGuire said: “This whole experience has been horrific, made worse by Mr Bottarelli’s refusal to plead guilty to attempted murder.

“The injuries that my husband has to live with and the trauma that this has caused will affect our family forever.”

The Metropolitan Police previously said that one victim had injuries that were thought to be “life-changing”, while another escaped with minor injuries.

They added that a third victim did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

Mr Bottarelli is now due to be sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on April 30.
