Pupils “flourish” at a school where they are calm, friendly and respectful, Ofsted inspectors have said.

The school watchdog found that St John Fisher Catholic Primary School on Melrose Road, Pinner, is an ‘outstanding’ school in its first inspection since becoming an academy.

Inspectors visited the school on December 5 and 6 last year, and said it was ‘outstanding’ in all fields.

The report stated: “Pupils flourish here. They are happy and kept safe. This is because there are always adults who are there to help them should they need it. Behaviour in classrooms and around the school is exemplary.”

It was said that the children are focused and disruptions to lessons are rare thanks to the “calm, friendly and respectful” atmosphere in class.

According to the report, the curriculum is broad and ambitious, including for those with special educational and/or disabilities (SEND).

The report continued: “The curriculum is ambitious and sets out the knowledge, skills and vocabulary that pupils need to know. Essential content to be learned has been identified, starting from early years.

“Careful thought has been given to how this is sequenced to help pupils build on previous learning and know and remember more over time.”

Pupils also communicate effectively and with maturity, inspectors wrote.

As well as this, the report praises that children are kind and considerate to each other, listen to their friends and show “high levels of respect” towards each other.

The report concluded: “Leaders have created an ambitious culture that puts pupils’ learning at the centre of everything they do.

“Leaders at all levels, including those responsible for governance, share a real commitment to ongoing school improvement.

“They have a detailed and accurate understanding of the school’s many strengths and the areas they want to improve even further.”

When Ofsted previously inspected the school in 2009, which was also called St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, it was also found to be ‘outstanding’ before being converted to academy status.

Nina Pignatiello, headteacher at the school, said: "I am delighted to share the very positive feedback from our recent Ofsted inspection. I am extremely proud that the hard work, commitment and passion of staff, governors, trustees and most importantly our incredible children, has been officially recognised.

"The overwhelming support of parents mustn’t go unmentioned.  We pride ourselves on preparing our children for the future stages of their education and life, this is evident in our excellent academic outcomes and commitment to developing each child emotionally and  spiritually."
