A HEADTEACHER has said he is "delighted" plans for a new sixth form block at his school were approved.

Nower Hill High School, in George V Avenue, wants to build a three storey extension beside its gym to give 125 students over 16 years old a permanent base, and got given the thumbs up by Harrow Council last week.

Howard Freed, headteacher at the school, said: "We are delighted to have the sixth form here as part of the Harrow collegiate and we look forward to our new building.

"Nower Hill Sixth Form has begun very successfully and we are confident that together with Harrow Collegiate we will go from strength to strength."

Harrow Council does not believe the existing arrangements for sixth form students meet the needs of the curriculum and hopes the block, which will contain a number of classrooms and an IT suite, will solve the problem.

Councillor Marilyn Ashton, responsible for planning, was on the committee that accepted the proposals on Wednesday, June 4.

She said: "It's just improvement to the existing school. At the moment it does have a sixth form but it needs state-of-the-art, modern accomodation.

"This is about improving the school to build that accommodation."
