England faces Senegal in the World Cup last-16 on Sunday night in Qatar but have the two sides played before?

The Group B winners play their first knock-out match on the world stage since the team's painful extra-time semi-final loss to Croatia in 2018.

However, it seems that the Three Lions have left the past behind them after finishing ahead of Iran, the USA and Wales.

Meanwhile, Senegal qualified as the runners-up in Group A after their 2-1 victory against Ecuador.

Speaking ahead of the Senegal match, manager Gareth Southgate said:" We have to take a step at a time, the same thing. We talked about that from the beginning of the tournament.

“Our first objective was to qualify from the group. We knew we had three games to do that.

“There was an awful lot of noise after our second, but we stayed calm and on track, and we’ve qualified as well as anybody else has.

“But we’re now on to the more important part of the competition and we’ve got to get this bit right as well.”

Has England played Senegal before?

Sunday's historic match marks the first time the two sides have ever faced each other.

Senegal lifted the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in February this year.

However, they are regarded as the underdogs in today's match with the Senegalese side Sadio Mané due to an injury that ruled him out of the entire tournament.

It is not the first time England has played a new opponent this year after the team faced Ivory Coast for the first time in March.

Additionally, England's opening match of the World Cup was also their first feature against Iran.
