An adult day care centre has been forced to shut, with management saying it has become “increasingly financially unviable”.

Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre in Harrow Road is a charitable company that has been supporting older adults in Brent and Harrow since 1979.

The charity has announced that it will be shutting the service from December 15.

Reverend Greville Thomas, the chair of trustees, said that it could not afford to keep going due to a combination of the pandemic and the “almost total loss of Brent Council funding”.

It is understood there has been a steady decline of attendees, with only a third of people still going to the centre compared to 2019.

The centre is considering “alternative ways” to continue to help older adults.

A Brent Council spokesperson said: “It is unfortunate that the Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre has had to close.

"Following lockdown, many users chose not to return to day centre and while work has been progressing to develop a new model of working, not all providers have fully engaged.

“Our aim is to develop community-based day care opportunities, where people can choose how they want to spend their time for example by group reading in the library or age appropriate activities in leisure centres, while continuing to provide day centre care for the most vulnerable adults.

"We are committed to working with Sudbury to enable them to explore opportunities to develop an offer that will enable service users to have more choice and flexibility in day opportunities."
