Harrow residents are worried the area will soon have no pubs after the local Wetherspoons became the latest to be put on the market.

The Moon on the Hill is one of 32 JD Wetherspoons pubs that have been put on sale after the chain warned it faced losing £30million from repair costs and rising staff wages.

The news has left Harrow locals worried that the area is losing all of its pubs and restaurants. Posting on Facebook, Gwen Crick said: “Yep nowhere left in Harrow now except The George.”

Another Harrow resident added: “Very disappointing that another pub in Harrow is under threat.” A third commented sarcastically: “Oh joy, yet another establishment going…”

Residents have also taken to social media to worry about the future of Station Road. One resident said: “I’m not very hopeful for that site. Nothing survives for long at that end of Harrow shops.” A second said: “Harrow never seemed to be able to keep cocktail bars or nightclubs.”

Another was worried about the number of pubs in the wider area. They said: “So with Spoons going and O’Neil’s going – [that] just leaves junction, old Yates, and Royal Oak – not good enough.”

O’Neils pub, also on Station Road, had to close earlier this year too and has now been replaced by a Turkish restaurant. The Case is Altered, which is 10 minutes from the Moon on the Hill, was forced to close as the amount of car parking space near the roadside pub was limited.

Harrow pub The Moon on the Hill is one of 10 being put up for sale in London by Wetherspoons. CBRE and Savills have been appointed to market the sites, which are in town and city centres.

JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “On occasion, Wetherspoon does put some of its pubs up for sale. This is a commercial decision. We understand that customers and staff will be disappointed with it. The pubs will continue to operate as Wetherspoon outlets until they are sold.”

CBRE senior director Toby Hall said: “The excellent mix of locations in this portfolio is rarely seen in the market. With more than half of the portfolio located in London and the south-east and other strong locations in the south-west, Midlands and the north of England we believe the pubs represent an excellent opportunity for existing pub operators and new entrants."
