Harrow's new mayor for the 2022/23 year has pledged to help young carers and those suffering kidney problems.

Cllr Janet Mote was handed the chain and robe at an annual Harrow Council meeting on May 26, officially marking the start of her mayoralty.

Cllr Mote, who has been a councillor for 20 years, takes over the reins as mayor from Cllr Ghazanfar Ali, who was congratulated for his duties over the past 12 months.

Cllr Mote, who is a member of the Conservative group, which took control of Harrow Council at the May local elections, said: “It’s an honour to be the first citizen of Harrow. My mayoral theme for the year is love and respect – living, working in Harrow and the environment.

“My two charities are Harrow Young Carers and Northwick Park Hospital Dialysis and Renal Centre – both close to my heart and they do a fantastic job in supporting some of our vulnerable residents. I hope you will support them during my mayoral year.

“I am looking forward to continuing the great work of Cllr Ali and meet many of our residents and communities who play a huge role in making Harrow a great place to live and work.”

Cllr Mote served as cabinet member for children’s services from 2006 to 2010. She has previously been a teacher and carer, and this is one of the reasons why one of her two chosen charities is Harrow Young Carers.

Anne Moore will be the mayoress of Harrow and will be escorted by her two sons and daughter. Cllr Ramji Chauhan was chosen to be the deputy mayor.

Cllr Ali, the outgoing mayor, said: “My first few months were dominated by Covid. But during my time, I have been involved in many community events.

"I have met so many good people and organisations that bring the Harrow community together.

“Our work has raised almost £12,000 for good causes. I hope the incoming Mayor continues to this good work for Harrow.”
