The Sopranos star Paul Herman has died on his birthday at the age of 76.

Famous for his roles in some of the world's most popular gangster films and TV series, Paul Herman played Beansie Gaeta in The Sopranos and, more recently, Whispers in The Irishman.

From playing a dealer in Goodfellas to a gambler in Casino, the actor played a variety of roles in crime films over the span of his career.

The actor's death was announced fellow star of The Sopranos Michael Imperioli who played Christopher Moltisanti.

Writing on Instagram, Imperioli said: “Our friend and colleague Paul Herman has passed away. Paulie was just a great dude.

“A first-class storyteller and raconteur and one hell of an actor. Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in America, The Irishman, and of course The Sopranos are some highlights.

“Paulie lived around the corner from me the last few years and I am glad we got to spend some time together before he left us.

“I’ll miss him. Lots of love to his family, friends, and community of actors and filmmakers.”

Sharing a photo of friends gathered together, James Howard Woods, an American actor and producer, said: "This was a great night with great guys not so long ago.

"We lost Paul Herman yesterday. It’s a real heartbreaker, because there was no sweeter man on earth. Nobody was a 'star' in his pantheon; all his friends were just that. You always felt at home in his presence."

Actor and TV personality Tony Danza said: "Paul (Paulie) Herman was one of the greatest guys of all time. A great actor and a great friend.

"If you visited NYC from LA, he was the entertainment director. We will all miss you so much, Paulie."

Film and TV fans have also paid tribute to the actor.

One said: "Paul Herman, Beansie in The Sopranos and a veteran of three Scorsese films. Rest In Peace."

Another fan page said: "Paul played many iconic Mob roles and will be missed by many! Rest In Peace Paul!"
