A town centre is facing 10 weeks of traffic chaos due to high street road closures.

Harrow Council confirmed a series of road closures in Wealdstone town centre in the run-up to the busy Christmas shopping period.

It said several diversions will be in place and “delays are to be expected” as road improvement works are carried out.

The works are scheduled to pause on December 15, with a break to ensure minimal disruption around the holiday period, before resuming in January.

They are part of a wider improvement project for Wealdstone, with plans to “fully refurbish” the high street.

Harrow Council said this will provide better quality pavements and roads, as well as new bins and signposts in the area.

The work has also been designed to help foot traffic as it will result in more pavement space.

During the construction period, cars and buses will still be able to use the section between Masons Avenue and Palmerston Road but temporary traffic measures will be in place.

Part of the section between Palmerston Road and Canning Road will be shut off during the works, with southbound traffic diverted via George Gange Way and Palmerston Road.

Street level car parking can still be accessed by Palmerston Road, while the multi-storey car park can be reached by Canning Road and Gladstone Way.

Wealdstone is at the heart of Harrow Council’s major regeneration plans, with ambitions to build hundreds of new homes and a new civic centre across the next decade.

Earlier this year, the council announced an agreement with constructors Wates to launch the £690 million regeneration project built around three council-owned sites in the town.

Council leader Graham Henson said it marked “the start of [the borough’s] renewal” following the impact of the “devastating pandemic”.

Harrow Council and local councillors have been contacted for comment on the road closures.
