Plans for 20mph zones in north west London could be scrapped due to lack of funding – despite already being approved by the council.
A Harrow Council report showed there could be funding issues around a proposed traffic calming scheme in the streets around Canons Park’s Howberry Road.
The project – which would drop the speed limit in the area to 20mph – was set to be developed using a grant from Transport for London (TfL).
However, this money has not yet been allocated and, as a result, the council said it is “not possible to implement this scheme” at present.
This comes despite the council recommending the scheme following a consultation with residents, which found the majority of people were in favour of the speed changes.
Local councillor Ameet Jogia said: “TfL have shockingly said there is no longer any funding available for the scheme, along with many other similar schemes across the borough.
“This has caused outrage across Harrow. I’ve never seen a consultation go ahead, without funding being secured beforehand.
“If TFL didn’t have the funding, they should never have wasted money on a consultation.”
He added there should be a back-up plan in place if the funding is not secured through the TfL grant and suggested this should be built into the council’s own traffic management budget.
The proposals would cover Cheyneys Avenue, Cloyster Wood, Cornbury Wood, Du Cros Drive, Howberry Close, Howberry Road, Longcrofte Road, Peters Close, Talman Grove, Watersfield Way, Wildcroft Gardens, Wychwood Avenue and Wychwood Close.
While the majority of residents backed the scheme, there were more against the plans than in favour in Wychwood Close, Cornbury Wood and Peters Close.
Council officers said they “would expect” the scheme to still go ahead “at some point” and would discuss the situation with TfL.
