One of Harrow’s oldest businesses will close its doors after operating for 93 years.

Buntings Garage, which was first established in 1896 before moving to Bonnersfield Lane in 1928, is closing its doors next month.

Managing director Roger Bunting, aged 78, says he will be sorry to lose the many faithful customers over the year who relied on Buntings for their car servicing, repairs and MOTs.

The business has been passed over from three generations in the Bunting family and ahs moved around different sites in Harrow.

It initially launched in Peterborough road by Mr Bunting’s great uncle Ernest. Later in 1914 Buntings moved to a shop in Masons Avenue, opposite Harrow and Wealdstone station.

It then moved to the current site at Bonnersfield Lane after Ernest won a £150 prize in a window display competition, which was used to purchase the current showroom in 1928.

And since then, the site has remained largely unchanged for 93 years.

On November 26, 2020, the Harrow Times reported plans were approved for almost 30 new homes to be built on the site.

A new five-storey building will cater for 22 flats and commercial space, which will sit in front of six three-storey mews houses.

Some concerns were raised by neighbours during an initial consultation on the proposals, including those around parking and the design of the building.

However, council officers noted that a contemporary scheme would “sit as a good quality addition to the street scene”.

There will not be any affordable housing at the new development, as a report presented to the council’s planning committee stated that to provide such housing would make the scheme unviable.
