A “declining” high street is set to benefit from almost £1 million worth of investment under a scheme driven by Historic England.

The High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme will see £986,600 dedicated to programmes in Harlesden to improve buildings – including the former HSBC bank – and roads in the town centre.

Funding will also contribute to community engagement, including workshops focused on supporting young people, and the creation of a ‘cultural consortium’ that will design programmes celebrating the area’s history.

Internal renovations to the former HSBC building will provide “a supportive space for young people” run by the Refugee Support Network.

It comes as Historic England noted some of Harlesden’s Victorian and Edwardian buildings “have seen better days”, while the area is “vulnerable to sweeping changes, with nearby developments in the pipeline which could undermine [its] social and economical character”.

The group also pointed out that while Harlesden is a “bustling, vibrant and multi-cultural hub” within Brent, its high street has “declined over a number of decades” – all of which makes it a worthwhile recipient of funding.

Historic England is dedicating £532,600 to the initiative, with Brent Council match funding £454,000 through its neighbourhood community infrastructure levy, which is collected as part of new developments in the borough.

Cllr Shama Tatler (Lab, Fryent), who is responsible for regeneration, property, and planning at Brent Council, said it will help realise “the ambitions and vision” for the region.

She said: “The funding is part of more than £5 million investment in Harlesden town centre, and the surrounding area, to provide community facilities, cultural events, workspace and general improvements from 2020 to 2022.

“This project will help create opportunities for the town centre, the local residents and businesses that are fundamental to its success.”
