THE chairman of the London Assembly's environment committee has commented on a proposed ban on free plastic shopping bags ahead of tomorrow's debate on the issue.
His comments come in response to a proposal by London Councils, which represents local authorities in the capital, that such bags should be banned in the city.
Darren Johnson said: "The London Councils' announcement is welcome but we need to ensure that any ban on the distribution of shopping bags has robust legislation in place so that it works, is free of loop-holes and dramatically reduces this environmental hazard in London.
"The committee will be examining such details at a public meeting with London Councils, major supermarket chains and others tomorrow."
Members of the public can attend the meeting at 10am in the Chamber at City Hall, near Tower Bridge and ask questions to the committee.
