A JAZZ trumpeter from Harrow is one of the acts due to perform at this year's London Jazz Festival.

Abram Wilson is playing in a showpiece concert at London's South Bank Centre together with the London Community Gospel Choir.

Wilson, who works and plays for Dune Records, based in Canning Road, Wealdstone, will be performing with the choir in Roll Jordan Roll, a unique musical performance telling the story of Tennessee slaves who became the first African Americans to sing in Britain.

The concert, on Friday, November 23, is a celebration of the tenth anniversary of Dune Records.

The second half will feature Jazz Jamaica, a 13-piece jazz ska band led by Dune founder Gary Crosby.

The band will lead a celebration of Jamaican music, including guest performances from reggae pianist Marjorie Whylie, rock singer Myrna Hague, and guitarist Ernest Ranglin.

Ranglin, a pioneer of Ska music, is also playing on Wednesday, November 21, at the Jazz Café, in Camden.

The festival starts on Friday, November 16, with a special celebration of what would have been the 90th birthday of legendary jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald, featuring a host of modern day performers and the BBC Concert Orchestra in the refurbished Royal Festival Hall.

Other festival performances include The John Dankworth Big Band performing at LSO St Lukes, in Old Street, on Sunday, November 18, to celebrate the 80th birthday of the legendary saxophonist, and the Complete Works of Thelonious Monk, with all 70 of his compositions played by a seven piece band at the South Bank Centre, on Sunday, November 25.

The festival, which ends on November 25, will feature more than 100 performances at venues across London.

Some of the concerts are free to attend, and BBC Radio 3 is also broadcasting a number of the performances.

Roger Wright, controller of Radio 3, has vowed to broadcast as many of the concerts as he can fit into the schedule.

He said: "There is so much to look forward to. Our partnership with the London Jazz Festival is really important to Radio 3 because of our commitment to a wide range of music on the station and to our continued support for live and new music."

The Jazz Jamaica and Abram Wilson concert starts at 7.30pm at the Royal Festival Hall.
