Friends took to the streets to stamp out litter bugs at an underground station.

Litter-pickers Rubbish Friends pulled on their gloves at the weekend to help tackle litter around Sudbury Hill Tube Station.

The group was set up by Harrow West Conservative parliamentary candidate Hannah David last summer as a social action initiative to keep the borough tidy and to encourage greater pride in our area.

Since then, many volunteers have signed up to the scheme, helping to clean up some of Harrow’s worst litter and fly-tipping spots.

The litter-pick was organised following a Harrow Council meeting on February 26, in which councillors pushed through a budget of £83 million in cuts, including cuts to street cleaning.

Mrs David said: “The residents of Harrow are furious at this latest round of budget cuts. Every week, I receive emails from residents who are concerned about the damage that litter on our streets is doing to our environment and to our local economy. With these new cuts things will only get worse.”

“When the council refuses to do its job, it is our civic duty to act. That is what Rubbish Friends is all about. However with these new cuts the litter problem will soon be out of control. That is why I am standing up to Harrow Council and am calling for them to reinstate the street cleaning budget.”
