BANTHAM AND ONGAR: The ladies beat Silverthorn away in the Top Club competition by just five shots, after winning two rinks each.

Brenda Perrett won her singles match 21-10; Joan Barnes, Rita Stacey, Estelle Bell and June Ashley won the fours 17-9, Hazel Issitt, Sheila Nash and Joan Cooper lost the triples' 12-18 and Bridie Bailey and Doreen Oddy lost the pairs 11-19. They face Quendon in the next round.

In the preliminary round of the County Triples Bridie Bailey, Joan Cooper and Doreen Oddy beat Griffin ladies 33-5. Again they face Quendon next.

Keith Lodge, competing in the first round of the County Benevolent Cup at home, overcame A. Hart, of Stock and Buttsbury, 22-16.

Bantham and Ongar lost out at home to Warley Hill in the Brentwood and District League winning by just a rink. Jonathan West, Dave Stacey and Keith Lodge won 28-15. Bill Cook, Len Harris and Fred Balcombe lost 12-16; Don Wood, Ralph Cooper and Eric Monk lost 9-22 and Jim Heppel, Bruce Hopking, Gerald Murfitt lost 10-27. They took two points.

In the Chelmsford and District League however, they beat Lionmede A by ten points to nil, winning all rinks at home for an overall score of 66 shots to 31. Keith Lodge, Ralph Cooper, Bill Cook and Danny Bentley won 22-4; Mike Nash, Len Harris, Geoff Hyatt and Fred Balcombe won 26-13; Jim Heppel, Cliff Morris, Don Hedges and Eric Monk won 18-14.

They beat Sawbridgeworth by 61 shots to 54 for seven points to three in the Essex and Herts league. Irene Morris, Don Hedges and Ron Oddy won 21-11; Bill Cook, Joan Cooper and Geoff Hyatt won 13-9; Don Wood, Doreen Oddy and Jim Heppel drew 15-15; Cliff Morris, Brian Issitt and Alan Topliff lost 12-19.

BUCKHURST HILL: In the Essex County Fours, Daphne Wood, Carol Freeman, Margaret Dainton and Joan Davies beat Silverthorn 21-1, and then Wanstead Central by one shot in the local area final to go through to the last 16.

They lost out to Wanstead in the Ladies Top Club competition by just three shots with the result level at two rinks each.

The men played Harlow B in their second round of the National Two Fours, and triumphed with Mac Magudia, John Woodroof, Ian Green and Malcolm Lord winning 17-15 and Ray Ascott, Peter Tuff, Gordon Ramsden and Roger Pike winning 28-8.

Harlow were again their opponents in the men's Top Team competition but this time Harlow were the victors with Dave Powell and Frank Dodsley in the pair's winning Buckhurst Hill's only rink.

Daphne Wood, Thelma Ramsden, Gordon Ramsden and Alan Hawkins beat Connaught 20-16 in the National Mixed Fours and the club beat West Essex 7-1 in the Simon Shield.

In the Foresters League, they made a poor start to the season, losing to Wanstead Central (see Central results below) and in the Thursday Fours League Division Two, the B team lost 12-31 to North Weald A, while the C team won 23-14 against Wanstead Central A. In Division Four, the A team lost 9-24 to Chingford B, the D team won 17-15 against Wadham B, and the E team won 15-12 against Epping A.

ESSEX COUNTY: Alan Knight is celebrating the start of his summer season as Essex County outdoor bowls president with a game between a County Executive team and his club Wadham at home this Sunday. He has also been elected Junior Deputy President for the county (indoors).

WANSTEAD: The club started the week with a defeat to Ilford in the Redbridge Afternoon League by 38-32 shots.

John Strudwick, Jeff Smith, Alan Edgar and Bob Ellis lost 21-12, A Other, Jim Sidnell and John Pluck won 20-17. Wanstead gained two points to Ilford's four points.

They then played Woodford, winning both rinks at home and losing one and winning one away, to take overall victory and 13 points from the possible 15.

D.K. Sharma, Ron Brown and Len Pendry lost 9-22; A Other, A Curran and Bryan Kelly won 31-11.

Wanstead's Valence Triples League campaign got off to a disastrous start against Salamander with a 42-58 shots reverse on Wednesday. Rowland Beckett, John Pluck & Bryan Kelly went down 11-17; Alan Carter, Tony Curran & Alf Kitchener went down 14-21 and Cyril Shaw, Terry Batchelor and Ralph Dearman went down 20-17.

WANSTEAD CENTRAL: The club lost narrowly to local rivals Ilford in the National Top Club competition.

Rod Hudson won the Two Wood singles rink, Len Welton lost the Four Wood singles rink, Steve Welsh and Geoff Dulieu lost the pairs rink on the extra end, Russell Hughes, Bob Anderson and Paul Whellams won the triple's rink, but Terry Lichkin, Bill Wray, Bob Druce and Ray Green lost the Fours rink.

They gained their revenge in National Double Fours competition when they defeated Ilford by an overall 41 to 31 shots.

Russell Hughes, Bob Anderson, Ray Green and Rod Hudson beat D Betts, J McCabe, D Waters and P Rodrigues 22-10 and Colin Foster, Geoff Dulieu, Jim Reynolds & Paul Whellams lost to M Bevis, K Tyler, T Hughes and C Granger 19-21. Central defeated Barking in their first match of the Valence Triples League competition by an overall 56-47 shots.

B Jones, L Welton, R Druce won 23-9; C Foster, R Anderson, R Green won 19-15; K Lloyd, M Bird, J Reynolds lost 14-23.

They beat Clayhall in the first leg of the Jackson Shield Knockout competition: L Welton, K Lloyd, S Welsh, P Whellams beat D Green, M Allen, M Wyburn, P Woodford 17-15; T Lichkin, M Bird, J Reynolds, R Green beat M Butt, N Morris, K Bird, and J Rutter 24-16 and R Hughes, C Foster, R Druce and R Hudson beat L Spring, D Saltrick, J Howes M Brenner 26-12. The second leg will be on Sunday.

In the Forester's Triples League, Central had a very good evening when they defeated Buckhurst Hill winning all four home and away rinks to take the 15 points on offer: R Kenny, D Peterson and S Welsh beat R Davies, B Easton and F Dodsley 19-15; T Seago, K Lloyd and M Bird beat J Golderi, T Moore and J Woodroof 20-12; T Pratt, M Smallwood and P Norgate beat P Tuff, K Fox and R Tredgett 17-13; G Rose, J Ellis and T Lichkin beat D Powell, R Ascott, S White 18-15. In the Walthamstow and District Thursday Afternoon Fours League, Central A team T Pratt, G Curtis J Ellis and K Lloyd lost 14 - 17 against Buckhurst Hill C. Central B of F Frid, S Edwards, D Peterson and J Woolford lost 17-33 against Eastern Postal and Central C of T Welton, G Rose, M Bird and J Reynolds won 25-19 against Silverthorn B.

WADHAM: In the Clarke White League Wadham faced Aveling Park. Len Smith, Derek Baptie, Ed Stevens and Barry Bates won 35-15, while Steve Powell, Alan Green, Derek Brown and George Coster went down 14-27. Overall win to Wadham.

In the Thursday Fours, Wadham A's team of Dick Kent, Ed Stevens, Derek Baptie and Barry Bates beat Griffin A 24-12. Wadham B of Ron Farnell, Alan Green, Bert Scott and Tony Marsh beat Buckhurst Hill A 18-16.
