A village’s last remaining bank will close in three months' time.

Barclays has informed customers that its branch in High Street, Abbots Langley will shut permanently on February 19.

The news means Abbots Langley will be left without any recognised bank, with residents only able to rely on the post office for banking services.

Barclays, which has closed and continues to close dozens of branches around the country, says it has identified just 88 customers who use the Abbots Langley branch "exclusively" for their banking.

The bank added that over the past year, 44 per cent of Barclays’ customers in Abbots Langley have been using nearby branches, and although the number of counter transactions has gone up over the last two years, 86 per cent of Barclays’ customers use other ways to do their banking such as online or by telephone.

At Abbots Langley Barclays, which is currently open four days a week, figures show there have been around 1,700 counter transactions altogether between April 2017 and March 2018, and April 2019 and March 2020.

Further details about the closure and feedback the bank received during consultation will be made available before the bank closes in February.

Barclays has told customers its closest branches are in Watford High Street and in Hemel Hempstead.

A general statement from Barclays regarding its countrywide branch closures says: "Our branch network and the colleagues who work in them remain a vital part of what we offer our customers.

"Yet with customers visiting our branches less and less each year, we must constantly assess how and why our branches are used and make decisions based on that insight.

"There will be times when this means that we will make the difficult decision to close a branch."
