A crash involving two vehicles has led to delays on two motorways this evening.

A collision has taken place on the northbound carriageway of the M1 between junction 6A for the M25 and junction 8 for Hemel Hempstead.

Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue tweeted that it was called to the M1 at 4.10pm, sending crews from St Albans, Harpenden, and Rickmansworth to the scene.

One person was trapped inside a vehicle and fire crews worked to free them.

They have been taken to hospital although their condition is unknown.

Highways England says that one lane is closed - and the incident has caused major traffic delays.

The traffic agency is reporting four-and-a-half miles of congestion approaching the scene of the crash on the M1, adding around 30 minutes to people's journeys.

Queues are currently tailing back on the M1 to junction 5 for Watford.

The M25 has also been affected in both directions at junction 21 near St Albans.

The A414 from London Colney and the A405 are both slow into the Park Street roundabout, while the A41 is also busy heading into the Dome roundabout from the Meriden as drivers avoid the queues on the M1.
