A Spitfire plane will be flying past Watford this weekend with a message of thanks to NHS workers.

The plane - which will carry a bold 'Thank U NHS' message and have names of key workers and everyday samaritans handwritten on its body - will be flying over Watford General Hospital on Saturday (August 1).

Plane spotters in Watford are advised to keep their eyes peeled at around 4.15pm.

Ahead of the flypast, Aircraft Restoration Company is urging people to continue to nominate names to be hand written onto the iconic, blue photo-reconnaissance Spitfire.

Members of the public can make a small donation to NHS Charities Together and then nominate a key worker or anyone who has undertaken small acts of kindness throughout the pandemic.

Aircraft Restoration Company wrote on its JustGiving page: "From a family member to a close friend or supportive neighbour, you can say thank you for their support through the Covid-19 pandemic by nominating their name to be written upon the NHS Spitfire. By doing so you will also be helping to raise money for the incredible people working and volunteering within our NHS.

"There is room for 80,000 names, and as these are added to the Spitfire, the UK will be able to watch this extraordinary visual spectacle unfold. A kind gesture that will donate to a great cause. Donation window closes on 20th September 2020.

"The aim is to lift the spirits of those across the UK, many of whom are still living in some form of isolation, whilst also thanking the hospitals, communities and individuals who have been at the forefront of getting the country through the pandemic."

Watford General Hospital is just one of many hospitals Aircraft Restoration Company's Spitfire plane will be flying past.

It will take off from Goodwood Aerodrome in Chichester at around 3pm and fly over hospitals in Portsmouth, Isle of Wight, Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton, Basingstoke, Frimley, Reading, Amersham and Oxford before making its way to Watford.

After Watford, it will make land at Duxford Airfield.

The Spitfire that will make the flypast was specifically built and used for photo reconnaissance during the war, carrying cameras instead of weapons. It was also flown and air-raced by the famous female ATA pilot Lettice Curtis.
