A van driver has died after he crashed into a bridge in the early hours of this morning.

The emergency services were called to reports of a crash on the A1081 London Colney bypass at 3.40am (Monday).

Police say they were told a white Peugeot van, travelling in the direction of the London Colney roundabout, had left the dual carriageway and collided with a bridge support.

Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue cut the driver out of his van and paramedics attended, but the man aged in his 40s died at the scene.

His next of kin has been informed, police say.

Police said earlier this morning that a man had suffered serious injuries but at around 11am, a statement released by the police confirmed the collision had been fatal.

Investigating officer Russell Jones, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire road policing unit, has said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the driver who sadly lost his life following this collision.

"We are investigating the circumstances of this incident and I’m appealing for anyone who witnessed it, has information that could help or has relevant dash cam footage to make contact with us.

"I’d also like to hear from anyone who may have seen a white Peugeot Partner van driving in the area in the early hours of this morning.

The A1081 was closed in both directions between the Bell roundabout and the London Colney roundabout while emergency crews attended the scene.

One lane remains closed travelling northbound but southbound is open.

Today's fatal crash was the second in just seven months on this stretch of the A1081 London Colney bypass.

A car driver died following a collision with a lorry at around 1.30pm on November 8.

The man, aged in his 40s, and who was from North Hertfordshire, died at the scene.

A fatal crash also happened on the nearby A414 in Smallford last month.

Michael Clark, 46, was found dead by police after his Ford Fiesta was found on its roof in a field off the dual carriageway.

The collision happened on May 21.
