Ernie Mackenzie (End the MLX saga, Letters, February 28) criticises Watford’s Mayor for writing to the Prime Minister to promote the Metropolitan Line Extension (MLX). The MLX would entail the closure of Watford Met Tube station, and he claims it “would mean thousands of commuters now being diverted to Watford Junction every day when it is already rammed solid”.

By writing this he is either showing that he knows little about the MLX, or, more likely, he is knowingly omitting to mention the full benefits of the scheme.
The MLX does envisage the closure of Watford Met Tube station. However, as well as linking the Metropolitan line with Watford Junction station, it would mean the opening of three new tube stations across Watford - Cassiobridge, Vicarage Road and Watford High Street.
While the closure of any existing station would be sad, the prize to be gained in this case is having four Tube stations in Watford. This definitely makes the MLX something worth considering.
