A university student has tested positive for coronavirus - and now the campus is set to close.

The University of Hertfordshire, which is mainly based in Hatfield, announced on Thursday night that it had a confirmed case involving a student.

A university spokesperson said: "A student studying at the University of Hertfordshire has tested positive for Covid-19.

"We are working closely with the NHS and Public Health England to support the affected student, who is being looked after at home.

"We want to reassure our students, their parents and our staff that the health, safety and security of our community is always our highest priority.

"We continue to follow PHE and Government advice and the University is continuing to operate as normal. As a precaution, we have cleaned the affected areas in accordance with Public Health England advice.

"In line with the advice from Public Health England, we urge any students, staff or visitors who are experiencing a high temperature or a new continuous cough to stay indoors and self-isolate for seven days from when your symptoms started."

On Friday afternoon, the university announced that from March 23, students are being asked not to attend lectures on campus. Online learning will take place between March 23 until after the Easter break.

As a precaution, the university has suspended all staff travel to China, Hong Kong and Italy until further notice.

The university has also been in contact with staff and students who may have travelled to and from the list of areas above.
