One of Watford's busiest roads has been gridlocked all day - but the good news is today should be the last of it.

A water main burst in Hempstead Road, near Ridge Lane, earlier today causing severe traffic disruption for drivers heading both in and out of Watford.

It also left some customers without water - in total 24 streets in the WD17 postcode were affected.

Most households should now have had their water restored and be back to normal.

According to Affinity Water's website, its technician has completed the repair to the water main.

Shortly after 5pm, an update read: "We have successfully repaired the burst water main and anticipate full restoration of your water supply within the next one hour.

"Where it has been necessary to excavate the area we will continue to work with the local highways authority to return the road surface area to normal and ensure that the road or footway is safe for all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

"This may mean that we have to maintain the site and any necessary traffic management until this is the case.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by this incident and would like to thank our customers for their patience today."

It looks like the road will be cleared tonight but there's a chance the traffic lights could still be in place in the morning, so drivers may want to leave extra time for their journeys.

Two-way temporary traffic lights remain in place for now.

As of 7.15pm, traffic is still queuing both in and out of town.

Affinity Water had been granted a permit of until March 17 by Hertfordshire County Council to complete the repair.
