A fluffy terrier dog was rescued in a blaze which destroyed the entire back room of a house.

Firefighters from Garston, Rickmansworth and Watford were called to a house fire on Garston Drive today (January 17) at 11.40am.

The Garston fire engine arrived first and found flames and smoke coming from the conservatory of the house.

A woman was at the side of the building and a newly recruited firefighter, Tom Hutson, had to break down a door to enter the building and save a fluffy white terrier dog named Radley.

This was the first pet which he rescued from a house fire.

The entire room and roof has been completely damaged after the fire was extinguished.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, congratulated the work of the fire services and said: “Thanks to the work that our emergency services do to keep everyone in our town (including dogs) safe!”

Watch Commander Steve Smith asked that people should assure combustible items are kept away from sources of heat and any concerns should be addressed to local fire stations who will carry out a free fire home safety visit.

Circumstances to the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
