A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been put in place for the next few days.

Heavy rain is expected to hit Watford and Harrow expect to last until this Friday (December 20), according to the Met Office.

The yellow warning covers parts of the midlands and much of the southern parts of England, including Watford and Harrow.

Periods of heavy rain are likely to fall from this afternoon (Wednesday) until midday Friday, with 30 to 50 millimetres of rain expected during this time.

There could be dry spells in between but the overall amount of rain might lead to flooding in some areas, the Met Office said.

The Met Office said people can expect delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

Spray and flooding could cause difficulty driving and road closures.

They also said there could be areas cut off by flooded roads and homes and businesses could be affected by floods.

Meteorologist Bonnie Diamond said: “There’s an area of low pressure in the Atlantic that’s pushing in form Ireland eastwards later today.

“This means that is going to bring strong winds and coastal gales to south west England and Wales, the winds turning increasingly strong through later today and also heavy rain.

“So there is quite a few warnings in place at the moment.”

Ms Diamond said it is too early to predict the weather for Christmas Day but temperatures are expected to reach 11 degrees celcius in some places over the weekend.

She said: "Into the weekend, things are going to settle down a little bit, compared to the heavy rain and strong winds, with some signs that drier, quieter weather might become established around Christmas Day."
