Essential maintenance to the ceiling of the Watford Colosseum has been completed after a month of cancellations.

The Watford Colosseum will be continuing its winter programme today (December 12) with Santa Claus and The Night Before Christmas, after carrying out repairs to its ceiling.

Watford Borough Council said six acts and performances between November 13 and December 11 were cancelled after an inspection of the 80-year-old building found some movement in the ceiling.

Aakash Odedra Company, which offers dance classes, was affected by the cancellations. It previously issued a statement on November 22 suggesting the repairs involved the ceiling.

Watford mayor Peter Taylor said: “I am pleased to announce that Watford Colosseum will resume its full winter programme from this Thursday.

“I know the past few weeks has been a very frustrating and trying time for many customers who were looking forward to shows they had booked.

“We have been working hard to resolve the unforeseen issues that arose in the auditorium and the Colosseum team has been busy rebooking as many of the cancelled shows as possible.

“70 per cent of these events have now been rearranged for later dates. We look forward to welcoming people for the full festive programme over the coming weeks and beyond.”

Many of the cancellations were announced just days before, sometimes even on the same day.

On November 13, an Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark show was cancelled, which the Colosseum announced was due to “unforeseen technical issues”.

Other cancellations included Shiamak’s Winter Funk: Rhythm Nation, acts from Rick Wakeman, Rob Beckett Adam Kay, and a show called The Darkness which had been scheduled for Wednesday (December 11).

At the time, audiences were only told by Watford Colosseum that the cancellations were due to “urgent repair work”.

Refunds were issued for all cancelled events which were not postponed.
