A burst water main has shut Water Lane in Watford town centre since Tuesday.
Affinity Water was initially granted a permit to complete the repair by December 6, but this has been extended until December 13.
A hole has been dug in the road on the bridge near the junction with the ring road.
There is pedestrian access but the road is blocked off to drivers.
Motorists are diverting via Lower High Street, but this route is busy.
A lead replacement programme on pipes in this area of Water Lane was undertaken by Affinity Water back in September and October.
The water company has been approached for comment to explain what has caused this leak to happen.
