Former Watford player Etienne Capoue was named Man of the Match as Villarreal beat Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The midfielder was still with the Hornets for the beginning of this season and even scored an own goal as they lost 2-0 away at Huddersfield back in December.

His final match in a Watford shirt came on Boxing Day last year, in Xisco Munoz's first match as head coach, when they beat Norwich City 1-0 at home.

Capoue was substituted late in extra time before a dramatic penalty shootout saw the Yellow Submarine win by virtue of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea missing from the spot after every outfield player scored.

The teams had played out a 1-1 draw in normal time and extra time in the final of the competition in Gdansk, before the La Liga side were able to claim the first trophy in their team's history and cement their place in the Champions League next season.

The Frenchman made 181 appearances during his time at Vicarage Road, scoring 14 times and providing eight assists.

At full time, he told Bein Sport: "To tell you the truth, I have no words, I can't describe the feeling I have.

"I've worked so hard to finally get a trophy in my career and we did it with such a nice team. We're so happy for the club as well because we didn't win anything and now we can come home with such a nice title.

"[The penalty shootout] was crazy, there was so much adrenaline for everybody, but at the end someone has to miss their shot and it was them and we are happy, so so happy. You can't even imagine.

"We've been struggling because we wanted to finish higher in La Liga but we had the chance to take the club to the Champions League next season and we did it. It's just fantastic, I have no words, I'm sorry."
