Will Hughes has added his name to a list of several Watford players happier to be playing in the 4-3-3 formation that has brought them three wins from their last three games.

The midfielder has scored twice during that run of matches, including one against Bristol City in the 6-0 home win and the winning goal against his former club Derby County last night.

Speaking after the match, Hughes praised the change of formation and said he personally has benefited from the shift in shape, joining the likes of Nathaniel Chalobah, Tom Cleverley and Ken Sema, all of whom have spoken about their preference for the system.

"It suits me. It suits a lot of our players," said Hughes. "Playing with a three, it's a lot more fluid, there's more rotation and it allows us to move forward.

"Playing 4-4-2 is a tricky one because it just didn't really click. We picked up results, but I don't think we were ever in control of games. I think having three in there allows that and I'm certainly benefiting from it.

Harrow Times:

"It wasn't ideal playing on the left but I'm not ever one to complain when I'm playing on the pitch, so I did my job, but it suits my game playing in a three, holding, as it allows me to get on the ball a lot more."

On the game itself, Hughes felt Watford did well to see the match out and claim the win, but felt they perhaps made things a bit more difficult than they needed to by inviting pressure in the closing stages.

"It's a bit of a cliche but three points is the most important," he said. "We got pushed very hard in the second half, they're a brilliant team, they're organised and hard to break down. We did make it hard for ourselves in the second half but I think we just did enough in the end."

Hughes also played down the part he played in scoring the winning goal, suggesting the deflection may take the credit away from him.

Harrow Times:

However, he said he was happy to add to his tally in any way he can.

"I'm delighted with it," he said. "I'm not sure it's mine, it took a big deflection, I've not seen it back, but I'll claim it - I don't get many."
