Former Watford defender Adrian Mariappa has posted a heartfelt message about the club after joining Bristol City.

Mariappa touched the hearts of Watford fans in an Instagram post, which thanked the Hornets for helping him “achieve my dreams”.

Bristol City confirmed in a statement yesterday that Mariappa has joined the club as a free agent until January after leaving Vicarage Road.

Posting a message earlier today, Mariappa reflected on his career at Watford as an “incredible journey”.

He said: “ As a new chapter of my career begins I would like to say thank you to everyone at Watford who helped me achieve my dreams from the age of nine.

“If you would have told me at this age I’d go on to have 20 years at my boyhood club I’d have taken it in a heartbeat.

“My family and I have been incredibly fortunate to share some of the best moments of my career and life with all of you at Watford. From promotion and relegations, nearly going into administration and battling to stay in championship to the club's highest ever finish in the Premier League.

“Throw in a few unbelievable cup runs and an FA cup final heartbreak, It’s all been an incredible journey.”

The defender left Watford in the summer after no agreement was reached during discussions regarding a potential extension to his deal.

Speaking about leaving the club, Mariappa said: “Even though my time didn’t end the way I would have wanted it to I’ll always be truly grateful. I served the club the best way I knew how, by giving everything on and off pitch every day. It’s been an honour and privilege. See you soon.”
