The next time Troy Deeney steps onto a football pitch, he will be making his 400th Watford appearance.

Only ten players have managed this before him in the history of the club, while only three have scored more.

Adrian Mariappa's departure in the summer transfer window means that Deeney is now the only current squad member to have made more than 300 appearances for the club and the skipper says that getting promoted this season is motivation enough for him to start adding to his tally, once he returns from injury.

Deeney also believes that Luther Blissett's league goals record is also within his sights, while surpassing the number of appearances made by both Wilf Rostron (404) and Johnny Williams (419) could also be achievable this season.

Harrow Times:

Speaking before the Hornets' 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers last week, he said: “My next game is my 400th game. I'm 24 goals behind Luther [Blissett] in the all-time league goal-scorer record here. I'm very motivated to do my job. I still feel I can deliver in the Premier League. I played a lot last season injured and not up to speed and still managed to score 10 goals. I know what I can do. I'm never going to be short of confidence – everyone knows that. The main aim is to get fans back in the stadium and us be back in the Premier League.”

Should he find those 24 goals during the remainder of his time at Vicarage Road, Deeney would hold the record for league goals scored by anyone at the club.

While he had options to return to the Premier League over the summer, the striker instead opted to stay at Watford, with the possibility of becoming a legend a genuine prospect.

Harrow Times:

Deeney now hopes he can do just that, while taking the club back into the top flight, along with head coach Vladimir Ivic, who he claims he is getting on with very well.

“We need to get promoted, it's that simple,” he said. “We've got some real talented players, a good base and the manager is real straight-talking, a guy I get on with. He's been great and I've been transparent, and he's been transparent. Hopefully you'll see us working together for a long time. I never said I wanted to leave. You look and say: what do you want your career to be? Do you want to be that striker who bounced around from club to club or do you want to be a legend?”
