Table tennis players from Harrow took top honours at the West London regional final of the Jack Petchey London & Essex Schools Singles Championships on Saturday at Oak Wood School, Uxbridge.

The event attracted 82 players from 12 schools from Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow, with age ranges including Boys and Girls Under-11, Under-13, Under-16 and Under-19.

Brothers Janak Shah 10, and Nishil Shah 8, from Pinner Park Primary School, battled it out in the final of the Under-11 Boys category. Janak eventually won after a long and tight contest, winning 11-5, 11-8, 10-12, 11-3.

Both boys have been playing for three years after being introduced to the game by their neighbour Mohammed.

This was their first time in this competition and both felt they could have played better. Janak, who is ranked sixth at Under-11, said: “My brother was the hardest to beat and we both liked the competition. We love winning.”

In the Under-19 Boys final, Abdul Hasib, 17 from Whitmore High School, was runner up losing 11-9, 11-6, 11-4 to Luke Shelborn-Frost, 18, from Barnhill Community High School.

Winners of the regional competitions progress to the Jack Petchey London & Essex School’s Singles Championships Final on Saturday, April 4 in the Sports Dock at the University of East London.
