Gillingham boss Steve Evans has praised Alex Jakubiak as “a real professional and a real credit to Watford” following the end of his loan spell after the striker could not be guaranteed playing time.

The Hornets have confirmed the 23-year-old has been recalled from his loan at the League One club and he is now set to join St Mirren for the remainder of the campaign.

Explaining the reasons behind Jakubiak’s departure from the Priestfield Stadium, Evans told the Gills website: "During the last couple of weeks I’ve had several chats regarding match minutes with Alex and Nigel Pearson at Watford.

“The summary was that I could not give any guarantees on this and Alex felt, with his contract up at the end of the season, it was essential for him.

“He is a quality player and will be a real asset for his next club. He goes from here with all our best wishes; I really want the kid to be successful. He is a real professional and a real credit to Watford."

The forward scored seven goals in 30 appearances with the club.
