Watford are off the bottom of the Premier League table after their unwanted record-breaking search for a victory finally ended at the 12th time of asking at Norwich City.

Goals from Gerard Deulofeu and Andre Gray secured the points, but only after the visitors had been forced to see out the last quarter of the match with 10 men following the dismissal of Christian Kabasele.

Here’s how we scored the Hornets’ performances on a night that will hopefully, and belatedly, kick start their climb up the table.

Ben Foster – 7

Another strong showing by the goalkeeper who was composed throughout and showed his shot-stopping qualities when required. Acted decisively when racing from his line to deny Onel Hernandez in the first half and caught the eye again with saves to deal with shots from Jamal Lewis and Kenny McLean after the break.

Daryl Janmaat – 6

A willing attacking outlet but, under instructions, pushed on too much at times in the first half leaving Christian Kabasele exposed. Played deeper after the break and particularly impressed with his composure after his side were reduced to 10 men.

Christian Kabasele – 5

The Belgian has been key to Watford’s defensive improvement of late and after an, at times, tricky first half contending with the lively Hernandez, played with greater defensive assuredness thereafter. But impetuosity reared its ugly ahead again with the bookings that caused him to be sent off.

Craig Dawson – 7

A generally encouraging showing from the centre-half, winning his share of tackles although his sloppiness played its part in Kabasele’s sending off with a poor pass.

Craig Cathcart – 7

Like Dawson, went about his work in an unfussy manner. Made a couple of vital interceptions as Norwich sought a quick response to going behind early on.

Jose Holebas – 6

Seemingly bought back into the side because he naturally offers more than Adam Masina going forward, did what was asked of him. A readily available outlet on the left flank and minimised Norwich’s attacking advances on his side.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 6

A mixed night for the French midfielder. There were moments when he threatened to break into his barnstorming best, offset with other times when his sloppiness in possession could have led to greater problems.

Will Hughes – 6

The most advanced of Watford’s attacking trio, in theory, but often had to drop back in to help with the midfield numbers. Not his best game on the ball, although he did contribute to positive effect at times, but did a lot of vital, ugly work off it.

Harrow Times:

Etienne Capoue – 7

Back in the side after his injury lay-off, the wtand-in captain led by example when Watford often had to dig in as they battled against the Canaries’ numerical supremacy in midfield. His organisational qualities stood out.

Gerard Deulofeu – 8

“He’s magic, you know.” A fine goal and an assist capped a man-of-the-match showing in a game where Deulofeu was a constant menace to Norwich’s poor backline. Also caught the eye with his willingness to track back at times. Was sacrificed after 70 minutes when the Hornets had been reduced to 10 men.

Roberto Pereyra – 6.5

Made a good run to open up the space for Deulofeu to score Watford’s early goal. Held the ball up well and arguably looked the most comfortable since pushed forward into an unaccustomed attacking role before injury cut short his night after half-an-hour.

Substitutes

Harrow Times:

Andre Gray – 6.5

Took his goal very well, albeit with the help of a deflection, and will feel he should have netted a second when he lobbed Tim Krul in the second half. Also held the ball up well.

Adrian Mariappa – 6

Replaced Deulofeu with 20 minutes of normal time after Kabasele had been sent off and brought his calmness and experience to bear. Ensured the Hornets kept their defensive shape as Norwich’s opportunities to try and get back into the game were limited.

Adam Masina – N/A

Introduced too late to be marked.
