Watford players rated after home defeat to West Ham United

Going forward the Hornets looked positive, but lacked a clinical edge, while in defence they looked disorganised and incompatible. 

Here's how we rated their individual performances:

Ben Foster - 6

In what is becoming something of a recurring theme, Foster was once again left high and dry by his defence.

He made some very good saves throughout, particularly from a close range header from Michail Antonio, but was given far too much work to do by those in front of him.

Kiko Femenia - 4

The Spaniard's performance was a very frustrating one to watch, as he consistently neglected his defensive duties.

He does add something to the team going forward, but needs to remember that defending is an important part of his job as well. 

Craig Dawson - 5

On the one hand, Dawson looked poor yet again, but he was essentially doing two people's jobs at the back, with the gap left by Femenia in constant need of cover.

Nevertheless, he is still struggling to prove that he can cut it at Premier League level.

Craig Cathcart - 5

Next to Dawson, Cathcart again looked shaky. 

He was far too easily muscled off the ball for goal number three and allowed the West Ham players far too much time and space on the ball.

Jose Holebas - 5

The Greek full-back seemed to put the most effort in out of the defenders, but was still easily brushed aside by the Hammers' forwards.

His attacking threat has somewhat diminshed this season, with his crosses lacking the precision they once had and his set pieces verging on thoughtless.

Etienne Capoue - 6

In place of the injured Troy Deeney, Capoue wore the captain's armband, but never really looked much like a leader.

He showed brief glimpses of his former glory in one or two midfield battles, but for the most part was sloppy and a bit lazy. 

Abdoulaye Doucoure - 5

After passing a late fitness test, Doucoure managed to play for the whole 90 minutes, which is a positive for Javi Gracia.

Also positive was his work rate going forward in which he regularly linked up nicely with other players and looked fairly creative.

However, defensively, he was dreadful.

His tackle for the penalty was clumsy and he was statuesque for the Irons' second. 

He didn't look like he fully understood the new system and was lost and confused at the back throughout.

Gerard Deulofeu - 7

The good news for Watford was that up front they looked an almost completely different side to the ones that went down with a whimper against Brighton and Everton.

Deulofeu was regularly involved in several dangerous attacking moments, but needs to find his clinical edge once again. It was an improvement, but still not good enough.

Tom Cleverley - 5

Had Tom Cleverley been more clinical in front of goal, Watford would have won this game.

He had two perfect chances to score, with the ball falling kindly to his feet in excellent positions, but one nearly cleared the stand and the other almost went out for a corner.

A frustrating return from a player, who should have taken his chance to impress.

Will Hughes - 6

Another whose finishing should have put Watford in front, but somehow didn't, was Hughes, whose open goal miss from a yard out was utterly baffling.

However, he showed a big improvement from the previous games and found Andre Gray with a neat through ball to get Watford's first goal of the season.

Andre Gray - 7

As far as striking performances go, this was streets ahead of anything Watford have seen so far this season.

With Deeney admitting he was trying to "be the hero" and play through an injury, Gray took a chance to show why the skipper's absence need not be too much of a cause for concern.

He took his chance with aplomb and held the ball up well, bringing others into the game. His only problem was a lack of service, for which he cannot really be blamed.
