Defeats in their first two games did not augur well for a trip to Liverpool 20 years ago today. But Watford were to return home with a famous win and their first points in what was then called the Premiership.
The Hornets were back in the top flight after an 11-year absence but Graham Taylor's side had opened their campaign with a 3-2 loss at home to Wimbledon followed by a 2-0 midweek defeat at Sunderland. Few then gave the Hornets much hope of avoiding a third straight reverse at Anfield where manager Gerard Houllier had spent £25million during the summer.
Despite this outlay, Liverpool were not watertight defensively and in the 16th minute Tommy Mooney gratefully converted after a Peter Kennedy free-kick had pinballed around the penalty area. It was to prove a decisive moment.
The Reds had enough chances to at least equalise - Steven Gerrard, Jamie Redknapp, Patrik Berger and Robbie Fowler all unable to capitalise as the courageous visitors held firm.
As Liverpool's search for a goal became increasingly desperate, the Hornets had opportunities to increase their advantage through Mooney and Micah Hyde, who saw a chip headed off the line.
A second goal was not forthcoming but one was enough. It was a season that was to end in relegation with no more away league wins, but it was a victory that remains one of the most famous in the club's history.
