Alex Jakubiak made a scoring start to his season-long loan spell at Gillingham to earn his new club a 1-1 draw at Doncaster Rovers in their League One opener on Saturday.

The 22-year-old made the breakthrough on the half hour when he converted after Mikael Ndjoli squared following a Brandon Hanlon flick-on.

However, Steve Evans’ side were to pegged back in first-half injury-time when Kieran Sadlier superbly volleyed past former Hornets keeper Jack Bonham.

Jakubiak, who spent last season on loan at Bristol Rovers, was replaced in the 62nd minute by Elliott List.

Fellow Hornets forward Michael Folivi has returned to AFC Wimbledon this season but they made a disappointing start to the new League One campaign with a 2-1 defeat at home to Rotherham United.

Folivi played for 83 minutes as goals from Freddie Ladapo and Clark Robertson, either side of Joe Pigott’s header for the hosts, proved enough for the Millers to take the points.

Ben Wilmot will have to wait to make his Championship debut after he was unused substitute in Swansea City’s 2-1 home win over Hull City.
